NewEra is a growing child. Our local Informix User Group recently = hosted Geoff Roach, Director of Tools Marketing at Informix, who shared = with us that NewEra 3.0 (due mid '96) will feature a spaking new and = thoroughly functional window painter. In addition to Peter's praises on NewEra's scripting language, which is = an extended 4GL, I'd subscribe that NE's object oriented capabilities = set it aside from other graphical development environments. Watch for = spiffy class libraries and agents that will provide nifty functionality. This refers to NE 1.1 and an early 2.0 release. I think SuperTables are too clever by half, hiding a lot from the programmer and forcing you to dig around at a pretty low level to do things that were fairly trivial in the 4GL. Great for simple stuff - single tables, simple joins etc - but try figuring out how to populate = one with the results from a temp table that you just built. It's do-able, = but distinctly not nice. My first choice for a database front end at the moment would be Progress V8, if only their damn ODBC drivers worked. Progress server is not a = patch on even Informix SE, though. OTOH, the NE language is great. My wish list would be Delphi generating/using NE instead of Object(ionable) Pascal. IF Informix are dropping VPPro (I haven't heard) you're also down a graphical reportwriter. Peter Wiley
