18 char limit to names

THe 18 char limit to names of tables, columns, etc. .... I assume this is an ANSI standrad.. can anyone give me a quick pointer to where this is stated ... I'm trying to convince some Microsoft cheeseheads that it's not some limitation ala 64K is enough for everyone. TIA, -Lin
