If you are working with Informix-Online and transaction processing is important use the Web Connectivity Framework which allows you to maintain state very easily as well as reducing the overhead required to open and close database connections. If you are using Illustra and content management is key to your application, use the web datablade and webdriver. With Informix Universal Server you will be able to use both of these capabilities as well as have access to a publish/subscribe facility. Below is a sumary of the advantages of this approach. INFORMIX WEB ARCHITECTURE SUMMARY Capability 1: State Management (managed or direct) Saves Money on Hardware There is no need to spend CPU time opening and closing database connections, the connection is maintained throughout the session. The maintenance of the connection conserves a huge amount of hardware resources that are spent on administrative tasks for use on real business issues. Saves Money on Client Hardware The web is enabled for REAL applications by maintaining the users logical progression through an application. Users can do more than be fed a series of static web pages. They can now interact with the application server with a thin front end client. Capability 2: Entire Web Site Stored in the Database Saves Money and Time for Web Site Development The need to write scripts to access the database is eliminated. The SQL is stored along with the HTML and is stored along with the HTML and exploded into HTML formatted data when the web page is accessed. You no longer have to write a program that establishes a connection, makes a query, accumulates the results, formats the results and only then feeds those results back to the client. It is all done with one step. Saves Money and Time for Web Site Maintenance Prevent "LINKROT" with SQL statements that can be used to locate and modify old or incorrect information on multiple web pages at once, without the need to open and modify each HTML file and Script file individually. Capability 3: Advanced Content Management Saves Money and Time for Web Site Development Allows developers to integrate and manipulate multiple datatypes into a web application using standard SQL, no specialized scripting is necessary to combine multiple datatypes. Allows Use of New Enabling technologies without Development New datablade functionality can be purchased through third parties and then easily integrated into a web site using standard SQL. This prevents the developer from having to be an expert in areas such as visual image recognition. Instead the visual image recognition datablade is plugged into the engine and you now have the power at your fingertips. Saves Money by including common Datatypes with engine Database comes with starter datablades for web, image, and text. These datatypes are the three most common found in most web applications. Capability 4: Publish and Subscribe Mechanism Saves Time by notifying users of new information The users no longer have to periodically check web site to determine if there is any new information that they are interested in. Instead they are notified of changes that pertain to the categories they subscribe to. Capability 5: Standard RDBMS Advantages Transaction Handling Security Backup and Recovery Replication etc...
