RE: onconfig
Posted in 2007
Stan asked what happens if the ONCONFIG file is edited while IDS is online, and which parameters take effect immediately without a restart. Replies said most parameters only apply at startup, but tape/archive settings (TAPEDEV, TAPEBLK, TAPESIZE, and the ON-Bar/LTAPE* ones) are picked up dynamically; simply restoring the old ONCONFIG (and checking its permissions) puts things right, and default/startup/current values can be compared in sysmaster:sysconfig. Art Kagel claimed LTAPEDEV changes need onmonitor or a restart, but David countered that ontape rereads TAPE*/LTAPE* at its next start, with the quirk that switching LTAPEDEV away from /dev/null immediately forces log backups while switching to /dev/null is not noticed until onmonitor is used; he asked for a feature request to control log preservation from a script. The thread then drifted into chat about the Cheetah open beta and pronunciation, with no further technical conclusion.

I don't run onbar, but I suspect you're right. LTAPEDEV, etc. would
also probably be in this group as well. Either way, restore the old
onconfig and you're OK. It may be a good idea to check the permissions
on the file before you're done, though...

I think the onbar config parameters can be changed on the fly as well.

LTAPEDEV can only be changed effective immediately by onmonitor.
Changes made directly to the ONCONFIG file for LTAPEDEV are not
effective until the engine is restarted. IB Everett and Andrew have it
covered, all but those archive related settings are only effective at
startup however, you can see the default, startup, and current settings
in the sysmaster:sysconfig table online.

BZZZT! Wrong.
Changes to all TAPE* and LTAPE* parameters are noticed by ontape
when ontape is next started.
Changing of LTAPEDEV from /dev/null to something else immediately
means that logical logs immediately start having to be
backed up before they can be reused.
Changing LTAPEDEV from something else to /dev/null is not noticed
immediately.
However editing the LTAPEDEV parameter via onmonitor does turn off
the 'preserve logical logs until they are are backed up' flag inside
the engine!
I find there very annoying since we run onbar parallel backups and
so only need to keep the logical logs from whilst the backup is
running.
We currently back up the logs all time, during the backup to SAN
space and 90% of the time to local disk. Every 10 minutes a job kicks
in
and removes the volumes on local disk. What a waste of time and
machine resources all because via a script we cannot turn on/off the
preservation
of logical logs.
Can I have a Feature Request for another LTAPEDEV value
(parallel_backup ) that means "Do not preserve logical logs for
backup unless they are required for
restoring a parrallel backup"! Perhaps that can go in Cheetah ;-

Also when is the "open Cheetah Beta" starting I want in!
David.
PS That rhymes "Cheetah Beta"!!

The Open Beta will be just that AFAIK - open to all, the closed Beta which started last year was by invitation only. I think most people are going to be grinning with they start using Cheetah - it is very good Cheers Paul Paul Watson Tel: +44 1414161772 Mob: +44 7818003457 Web: www.oninit.com Failure is not as frightening as regret. Neil, You do not need an application form for the open beta! Everybody will be able to download the new open beta Cheetah product and you do not have to wait long! Please stay tuned. You can be reassured that Europa did got it fair share in the closed beta program as well!! I know 4 German companies who are participating.... bye Sandor "Neil Truby" <neil.truby@arden ta.com> To Sent by: informix-list@iiug.org informix-list-bou cc nces@iiug.org Subject Re: onconfig 11.02.2007 15:31 <david@smooth1.co.uk> wrote in message news:1171170560.705250.70990@a75g2000cwd.googlegroups.com... > Also when is the "open Cheetah Beta" starting I want in! Excellent point. I did say "a couple of the other 13 original colony states...", which means two in many cases, sometimes more. Walter Biega for example, would most likely be pronounced Walta Biegar in Massachusetts--at least the Bostonians I had around me were doing. And they like to say "pahk the cah" ( park the car ) or beeah for "beer". They use the term wicked a lot too. As in wicked cold. ;-) Jack Parker wrote: > It should perhaps be pointed out that the 13 original colonies where not all > in what is now the Northeastern US. > > Folks from Mass generally DROP 'r's, not add them. > > Personally I try to avoid saying things like Beta, sticking instead with > important words like 'Beer', 'Pizza', 'Grinder'. > > j. > > -----Original Message----- > From: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org > [mailto:informix-list-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of Tool > Sent: Monday, February 12, 2007 1:44 AM > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: onconfig > > > > > Neil Truby wrote: >> <david@smooth1.co.uk> wrote in message >> news:1171170560.705250.70990@a75g2000cwd.googlegroups.com... >> >>> Also when is the "open Cheetah Beta" starting I want in! >> I think UK Tech Support can send you the application forms.
