We found that the query optimizer in version 5 would on occasion pick the wrong index. Informix indicated it was a defect and subsequent revisions have improved the problem (but not completely, I understand). The only work-around was to drop the "poor" index it was choosing. Usually it did not impact our primary applications. Their other recommendation was to go to version 7.
