If the database engine process is called sqlexec the product is Informix
SE. The sqlexecs are fired up by the application, the two being
connected by pipes. If there is a separate global process running,
called tbinit or oninit (actually there will probably be a number of
these, the original process forks the others)you have Informix OnLine.
Don't let them install OnLine without providing documentation and
preferably a DBA training course - in fact, even if it's SE (or Standard
Engine) try and get docs. and preferably a training course. Even if the
separate product runs itself without any help the course is always good
for the cv.
