Database import from Infomix 5.0 to IDS 11.0
Posted in 2008
The poster wanted to move a database from Informix 5.0 on SCO (raw partitions) to IDS 11.0 on RHEL using cooked files. One reply pointed to the IBM Informix Migration Guide, noting that an in-place version upgrade from 5.x would require going via 7.31 first. The practical answer given was simpler: use the 5.0 dbexport utility on SCO, copy the export directory to the Linux box, and run dbimport under IDS 11.10. This yields a clean port, works across raw-to-cooked storage differences, and existing SCO apps can still connect by changing INFORMIXSERVER, though recompiling with current CSDK/4GL is advised eventually.

Hi, Our application uses IDS 11.0 running in RHEL 5.0. We have used cooked file system for storing the database. We had the same application having Informix 5.0 in SCO environment. It also uses the file system partition. We wish to have the same database from SCO to reflect in RHEL environment too. Is it possible to import the database from Informix 5.0 to IDS 11.0 If so, Can you please let us know the steps involved!!! Thanks, Lakshmi
Hello, How about RTF(ine)M? Maybe "InformixIBM Informix Migration Guide" can help you. Overview of migration is given in table "Migration Paths to Version 11.50": Source Database Server: OnLine Dynamic Server 7.23 OnLine Dynamic Server 7.22 OnLine 5.1 or earlier versions Target Database Server: You must first migrate to Dynamic Server 7.31. Reference: The Version 7.31 Migration Guide Next step i 7.31 -> 11.50 migration: Source Database Server: Dynamic Server 11.10 Dynamic Server 10.00 Dynamic Server 9.40 Dynamic Server 9.30 Dynamic Server 9.21 Dynamic Server 7.31 Target Database Server: You can migrate directly to Dynamic Server Version 11.50. Reference: The Version 11.50 Migration Guide So, begin your migration by reading those two manuals. Yes. You can use the OL5.0 dbexport utility to export the database from the
SCO server. Port the export directory contents to the RHEL machine and use
the IDS 11.10 dbimport utility to import the data. This will be a simple
port of the database taking no special advantage of any 11.10 features, but
it should be a clean port. Even your existing applications on SCO will
still be able to access the database on the RHEL machine once the
INFORMIXSERVER has been changed to point to the new server (though you will
eventually want to port them to RHEL as well and recompile them with the
latest CSDK and/or 4GL libraries).

Is it possible to import the database residing in a raw partition to a cooked file system?

We have the database in the Raw partitions in old SCO system. But in RHEL, we would like to move the database to cooked file system partition. Also we would like to use the existing old database.

Is it possible to import the database across various type of partitions? We would like to move the database from raw to file system partition.

dbexport / dbimport will do this.
