They're on the right track with Universal Server coming out, which has adopted the new paradigm, the Web Browser. Client/Server isn't dead, it just evolved quietly into the hot new thing called intranets. :-) Universal Server, if it is what the pre-release materials say it is, attends to this new C/S model quite nicely. The old VT100 is now replaced with the WEB Browser. ( Application partitioning built-in, thank-you ) The biggest problem, as stated partially by the original poster, is maintaining state in a stateless world. The browser is not an active connection per se, like the terminal, but with the recent activity I've seen with HTTPD servers and APIs, we're on to the New Era, only it seems a Windows x86 world is not the purest way to acheive it. Even Apache now has mSQL connectivity, and API support. A book recently came out that is worth investigating: The Essential Distributed Objects Survival Guide ISBN 0471-12993-3 This is the update to their previous version, "Essential C/S Guide". I hope I haven't counted my chickens before they hatch, hoping too much for Universal Server. This product leaves behind most of the competition if it does what Informix says it will do. I eagerly await this offering. I will predict "if it ain't in a browser it ain't an application" will soon become the mainstay. You may also want to check out the Livewire offering from Netscape. Even if this product evolves rapidly into something else, it is a great front-door to the true new era. And a new book has come out to expand on "maintaining state in a stateless world", for Livewire, "Special Edition, Using Netscape Livewire" from Que.
