Yes you can do this as long as your archive or continuous logging will
fit on a single tape. We're doing almost the same thing. We have
continuous logging running in the background to one tape device with
stdout and stderr being redirected to a file so we can see any
messages. At the end of the week, we kill the continuous logging with a
"kill -s sigterm". Ontape then displays the log #s contained on that
tape to the log file and we label the tape accordingly. We then restart
continuous logging in the background with a new tape. Our script looks
something like the following:
ontape -c <<EOF >>ontape.log 2>>&1
EOF
We nohup the script and place it in the background using:
nohup <scriptname> &
You need to put a carriage return between the "ontape" and the "EOF"
above.
You can do the same thing with a level 0 archive by substituting the
"ontape -c" with "ontape -s -L 0" and redirecting the output to another
file.
