IBM Advertising

No, we won't ever ever advertise individual products: http://db2news.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/new-ibm-db2-vs-oracle-database-advertising-campaign/ This is surely true for Informix and others. However there is a single product named DB2 where we are always happy to make exceptions to our rules (:- I guess running this print and online media advertising campaign costs more marketing dollars then the whole IBM Informix marketing budget is. When will we see the same for Informix, IBM ?
Eric, I think that IBM is finally realizing that they have lost a lot of market share by not 'advertising'. But rather than spend the $$$ to actually revitalize the brands, they are attempting to create viral marketing on the fly. Unfortunately they don't quite grok what is and is not good viral marketing techniques. Creating a youtube channel to air shite aint going to cut it. I would hazard a guess as to why they are being more 'agressive' with DB2 is because of this quote "Live Webcast: Pull the Plug on Your IBM Mainframe. Save with Oracle. Join the free webcast on March 9th at 10 am PT." Which I saw while looking at Oracle's Golden Gate product. Everyone knows that IBM's mainframe business is their sacred cow. Interfere with that and IBM' drops the gloves. Now I got a rare chance to see the first half of Carlton Doe's presentation in Chicago. (Unfortunately I had a prior engagement at a former IBM mega customer out in the Chicago burbs to talk about Hadoop... ;-) He did show a itty bitty commercial that IBM is also running on their 'Informix' YouTube channel... so I don't know if its fair to complain, although I don't know where the Informix counterpart is on the blogosphere...' I tried to explain Informix's situation. Sure its a great product and blows the skirts off Oracle and DB2. Unfortunately, IBM tossed it down a gravity well. The problem with a gravity well, the longer you stay down the well two things happen.... 1) More Energy is required to pull yourself out of the well. More Energy means more $$$ and more effort just to get back to square one. 2) Time dilation occurs. Your products become less relevant and have less value as the rest of the world exceeds your product's capabilities. ( #2 requires that you are a science geek to understand that...) So marketing while critical are not enough anymore. Even former Informix/Illustra guys are off creating something new. (VoltDB) But I digress. Add to this the fact that IBM continues to not be able to create a consistent story on how their products tie together across the pillar, well, its no wonder IBM client reps, SSRs can't get their act together. And of course when the client mentions the O company, Global Services is more than willing to sell them O and the tons of services required to implement a solution. And that's only part of the problem. There's this thing called a disruptive technology.... In this case its called Hadoop. While that doesn't mean anything to the bulk of you... in Carlton's presentation with a certain POC that he did in Dallas... Hadoop/Hbase would scale a lot better. Especially when you start adding in geo spatial data. And yes, I kinda know what I'm talking about. ;-) (For those who know me... check out my LinkedIn profile to see what I've been up to for the past couple of years. :-) That's the problem. You're getting hit on a lot of sides and without good or proper spin and marketing, you're toast. In the Informix space... not as much as DB2. Just ask a couple of IBM's large retail customers about Hadoop. Just don't ask their sales reps because as one 'customer' put it... The ibmer who called him didn't know what Hadoop is... Sorry for the mini explosion of details. The point I'm trying to make is that its past the time of bee- itching about a lack of marketing. But hey! What do I know? :-) -G > From: eherber1967@googlemail.com > Subject: IBM Advertising > Date: Tue, 8 Mar 2011 08:26:52 -0800 > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > No, we won't ever ever advertise individual products: > > http://db2news.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/new-ibm-db2-vs-oracle-database-advertising-campaign/ > > This is surely true for Informix and others.
