RE: [Q] Patrol, Tivoli et al.
Posted in 1996
I have Patrol, been running it for about 6 months, for monitoring 7.11
engines. It's OK. I had to tweak it ALOT to get it work out of the box.
There were some changes in onstat output, around the 7.10.UD1 time frame,
which Patrol was/is not aware of (Patrol generates and manipulates onstat
output a lot). I was not impressed with BMC's QA of the Informix knowledge
module. There are a few things which I think the product should do (and any
other DBA would too), but it doesn't. I'll probably be writing my own
knowledge module/parameters to do it.
The benefit to Patrol, is that it can be used to monitor the systems, and
other applications, with a consistent GUI. Also, as Cheryl indicated, you
can use to monitor versions 5, 6, and 7. For the most part, it's OK.
Comparing to EcoTools or Platnum, I don't know how it rates.
I've seen cockpit (not available for my Sequents), but reports from others,
is that it's limited (again this from others...I have no hands-on). I have
OnPerf with my Sequent ports. It's a cool tool, but not a realtime
monitoring tool. I see it more as a number collection and performance
analysis tool, for queries. I think most people use it collect data, and
review...
I too had been waiting for the new tools, which I thought was going to
Tivoli based, and coming out late this year. The product I was aware of,
was dubbed The Informix Enterprise Command Center (IECC). This product
was/is being deployed with XPS. I thought it is was going to be later
rolled back to a 7.x release. This appears to not be the case.
I too had been trying to find out more information. Apparently, not too
many people know what's going on (maybe because Informix themselves is
uncertain ??).
I learned Friday, that the IECC, which is Tivoli based, remains with XPS.
There are some features, etc., which are truly XPS specific. I don't know
that there is any other Tivoli based product available, for monitoring
Informix.
I also learned, that there is a new tool (or a subset of IECC ?), which
will be coming out with 7.3, which is dubbed something like ROM (sp ??). It
is essentially the same tool which is bundled in with the Workgroup Server,
which is starting to ship now. This tool, and what will be part of 7.3, is
an esql/c application, and will not require Tivoli. It will have basically
the same the functionality as the IECC (the Tivoli based tool), without the
stuff which is XPS specific (DBSlices, etc.). My contact indicated this ROM
tool/7.3 would be shipping in 1Q97.
Hope this helps....If not, email me, and I'll try to fill in remaining
blanks.

I'v also looked at Patrol but being I did not look at DBCockpit/OnPerf
that is already included in the 7.X system, the advantage I could only see
is that Patrol will also be able to monitor my 5.X system.
I've been asking and never received a response, yet the Tivoli software
was orginally suppose to be included in the 7.2 version (elminating
DBcockpit/OnPerf). Like you I would like to here about this, yet all I've
ever gotten was the Software Vendors Input. Patrol, BMC and Tivoli
customers on this list where are you!!!
