That is just your own convention. Informix does not reserve any ports. You can use any names or port numbers that you want. The convention to use 1526 comes from the ingreslock port, 1524, which has been delivered as part of the default /etc/services file since the dark ages. Even this port is not sacrosanct unless you are running the old University Ingres. We actually use a whole range of ports beginning with 1525 all for TCP/IP, shared memory and pipes pretty much interchangeably. Art S. Kagel
