chinese character can not insert into table

Hi! My informix database was created by locale=zh_cn.gb. I tried to insert a character that was not in GB2312 code set, but failed . I was wondering why informix database intend to prevent some chinese codes from insert into this database,it just incurs problems that migrating data. So,I try to set locale=zh_cn.utf8 and it won't allow me to create database. Then I set locale=en_us.8859-1 , inserting is successfull. If I set english locale, any hurt?
