Convert from text to lvarchar

Hi All, Informix 9.x Sun Solaris We need to convert some columns in the database from Text to Lvarchar. We cannot do this directly with 'alter' since it asks for a cast. While defining a cast it requires a function to do the cast. Does anyone have a function which does this ? Or is there a better way to do this ?
