What you say agrees with the documentation, however it does not appear to work that way in practise. If, when a row is inserted it is locked, why doesn't a subsequent insert (by another process) fail if it attempts to insert to the immediate *left* of the first insert? I would have thought the second insert would fail because it tests the right adjacent key (ie the first insert) for an exclusive lock.
