Regarding backup/restore, some innovation could come from DB2 LUW world, perhaps. There it is possible to restore on Windows from backup made on Linux/Intel, of from AIX to Solaris. But, probably due to Little-Big-Endian issues it is not possible to use backup made on AIX to restore on Windows. And the backup engine and restore engine do not have to be the very same release. The real issue in Informix, could be the different page sizes... Everything is a page. But a page can be 2K or 4K. Transform 2K pages into 4K pages or vice-versa would be a nightmare... Regarding the need to have the same exact version I would also accept it peacefully.. Of course there are probably a lot of issues that I'm not aware...
