Federation as per DB2. The ability to access external databases such as other Informix databases on different instances, and oracle, DB2 databases etc. Also the ability to access flat files and spreadsheets. This is done in DB2 II with federated objects such as wrappers, servers, user mappings and nicknames. Refer to DB2 Information Integrator (DB2 II) documentation. After all they (Informix and DB2) are both owned by the same company.
