ontape - how to bypass a database?

Hello,
We would like to bypass the backup of a database (dbx) using
ontape. Will the following work? If not, please advise.
unix> ontape -N dbx -s -L 0
We are using 11.50.FC5 under Solaris.
Thanks!

I'm not sure that I understand the question. It looks like you are asking
if you can backup the Informix server but not back up one of the databases
it manages, namely the dbx database. Is that it?
Then the answer is no and no. No, -N dbx will not do that and no there is
no way that you can back up only certain databases and not others. The -N
option to ontape just changes the logging status of the database(s) named so
that they no longer support transactions and so do not log changes in the
logical logs. Ontape and onbar back up the entire server (ok with onbar you
have to option to back up only selected dbspaces). Even if you isolate the
dbx database in dbspaces that you do not archive, you will have to recover
those dbspaces if you should have to restore the server or they will be
marked offline after the restore, so you will have to back up those dbspaces
periodically anyway and if the dbx database is a logged database, then if
the back ups of its dbspaces are very old, you will have to roll forward
many many logical log back ups to successfully restore the server to a
usable state.
