estimating log size - users? maxrows?
Posted in 1997
The Administrators Guide says I can estimate logical log size as: (users * maxrows) * 512 It gives some guidance on how to figure out "users" - how many users I expect will access the database concurrently. If my "users" are CGI programs running on another box, using ODBC, does each specific access count as a momentary user? Does the user last only as long as that one CGI request is being served? For "maxrows", I have no idea what means. The total number of rows in a table? The sum for all tables in the database? Temp tables? Tables that are actively in use? Also, what are the units on that 512 number? With any seemingly reasonable numbers for users and maxrows, I get an improbably huge number for logical log size. Do I really need a 5Gb logical log for a database with up to 100 simultaneous users, or am I missing something? -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@cs.brandeis.edu -- The Left Bank Operation -- lbo@leftbank.com http://www.leftbank.com/ "Good literature is about Love and War."
