FW: In-place upgrade IDS 10.0.FC3 -> 11.10.FC2
Posted in 2007
We have upgraded a development instance with approx 120 small databases total 10Gb. The actual upgrade took half an hour (to Informix process to upgrade System database and our 120 databases - excluding backup and onchecks). With only a couple of databases the upgrade would be about 5 minutes. Make sure you have plenty of available space in rootdbs as sysadmin database grew considerably for us after the upgrade. We ended moving sysadmin to another dbspace - there is a function to execute to do this which we ran with users online. The upgrade (the in-place is the normal) usually does minimal changes only. But the devil is in the detail, so I can't give estimates for your scenario ... What you should do in any case is to take a backup BEFORE you upgrade. If necessary for speed, this can be an external backup. If you have a spare machine with enough space, you could take a test tour ...: Take a backup from production machine and restore it on the test machine with the old version. Then perform the test upgrade there ... it will give you a good idea how long it takes, etc. Then you can work out a plan for the real upgrade of the production server. You cannot have HDR running between servers of different version. So it's possible to upgrade Secondary and re-establish HDR between the upgraded Secondary and the (not yet upgraded) Primary.
