Re: Informix in the news! Part Deux...
Posted in 2005
Not a technical problem thread but a discussion about IBM's commitment to Informix after the acquisition. Participants debate whether IBM has given a credible product roadmap, complain about the lack (or poor quality) of advertising, and note news from the Informix Worldwide Conference in Atlanta: DB2 rebranded under "Information Management" and Janet Perna replaced by Ambuj Goyal. The main worry raised was ISV/application support (SAP, Oracle apps, CRM) rather than the engine itself. No resolution is recorded, just opinions and hopes that IBM and OEMs will stay committed.

what are you looking for Daniel We have been presented a road map to something like 2011 Its 4 years since the IBM acquisition and we have had 9.40 and 10 released since then and canvassed opinions for what people would like in vNext and vNext + 1 Other than saying they'll scrap DB2 and move everyone to Informix, what do they need to say to give you the rock solid commotment you are looking for?

On which subject, has anyone seen the TV ads that IBM is running ion the UK at present? Each scene, mentioning the "On Demnd" phrase, and being carefully crafted to include every signifiucant racial minority in America, with lots of American humour, all of them vingettes of situations so familair to UK viewers, such as the etiquette of US suburban golf clubs, and driving trucks through the vast deserts we have here. Truly awful! I've nothing at all against American or Americans, but the first rule of advertising is to NOT transport (Arrrgghhh! Split Infinitive!) one country's ads and play them unreconsitituted in another. Any fule kno that it just does not work. You might as well pour the money down a large drain ....

I said it: A road map. Give a written statement from the highest level of the corporation laying out specifically what steps are being made to provide a long term SAFE path for the existing customer base. And it must include not just that they will continue to develop new features but what they are going to do to GUARANTEE application support from SAP, Oracle, Baan, etc. A statement such as "it is our premier OLTP platform" is meaningless if no OLTP vendor is going to support it with new releases of their product. -- Daniel A. Well I've just been to the Informix Worldwide Conference in Atlanta..... Apparently Janet Perna's replacement (??) does not believe advertising works!! DB2 is NOT the main brand name anymore. It is been renamed "Information Management". More details to follow. PS Can anyone give me the correct spelling for the name of Janet Perna's replacement? It is a name I just can't seem to remember...

Daniel, I believe IBM have given a road map for product I think there has been specific Informix advertising in the UK in conjunction with some of the UK partners Janet's stance on Informix didn't help with SAP, I hope Ambuj's thoughts may change their stance. I also believe there is an need for Informix users to push their application provider and say "look at all these good things IBM are saying about Informix, is it stiill you plan to move away coz if I want to remain on Informix and may have to find an application that is available on that database" or "if I am gonna have to move the database to oracle I might as well move my application to oracle as well" I believe OEMs in the telco and networking infrastructure space appear to be sticking with Informix because they can't get the same throughput from any other vendor and IBM has convinced them Informix is around for the next few years. I hope IBM will make some announcements about these. CRM may need more work.
