One announcement -- an upgrade to INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server -- is prompting Informix to line-up customers to Beta-test version 7.3 release due early next year. Informix will also ship a version of INFORMIX-OnLine Extended Parallel Server with support for Windows NT by year's end. In addition to these product-specific plans Informix is planning a product re-branding campaign aimed at reducing the distinctions between databases and simplifying the purchasing process. A successful technology roll-out would signal a positive move forward, according to customers and analysts. "[Informix has] got to get people looking at their technology again," said Carl Olofson, an analyst at International Data Corp. (10/13/97, pg. 1, Craig Stedman) NETWORK WORLD "Start-up scuttlebutt: Part 1" Informix's Michael Stonebraker has formed a new company called Data Everywhere. The company plans to deliver products that allow customers data access from heterogeneous databases for analysis without setting up a formal data warehouse. Data Everywhere is expected to announce that it has raised $5 million in venture funding. (10/13/97, pg. 8, staff writer) ELECTRONIC BUSINESS TODAY "R&D gets real" Informix ranked 57 among companies that allot a significant portion of revenue toward research and development (R&D). Informix spends $120.2 million, or 12.8 percent of its revenue, on R&D costs. Other rankings include, IBM at No. 1, Computer Associates at No. 6, Microsoft at No. 7 and Oracle at No. 16. (10/97, pg. 30, Bruce Rayner) DATAMATION "I-commerce is in the cards" In this company profile of Informix customer American Greetings, the greeting card company explains why they are benefiting from using Internet and database technology to significantly improve and increase sales. "It won't be too many years before there will be a virtual explosion of Internet commerce," said Darrell Dalby, manager of the American Greetings Web site. "We want to have the learning curve behind us when that happens." Using Informix's Illustra Server, American Greetings manages and generates Web pages on the fly, offering several hundred different products throughout its site. A side-bar description of the server and Informix's DataBlade modules was included with the article. (10/97, pg. 109, Scott Wildemuth) ENT "Informix provides Visual Basic data management" Informix received additional coverage for the announcement of Data Director, its data management platform that allows Visual Basic developers to create and manage Informix-based applications. (10/13/97, pg. 43, staff writer) REPORT ON SMART CARDS "ImagineCard gives corporations secure use of networks" The ImagineCard alliance, of which Informix is a member, received coverage on two smart card systems released for corporations to conduct business securely on the Internet and corporate intranets. The smart card systems -- ImagineCard Corporate and ImagineCard Web -- are designed for corporate and business-to-business transactions where strong authentication, privacy and signature are required. Pricing for the ImagineCard Systems ranges from $100 to $250 per user. Also mentioned was Gemplus' own Gemplus ImagineCard Web application, which enables the company's VARs to access a Web page dedicated to supplying information.
