space of a index !!

hi all, I have a big table in my database with index on the colonne (a,b,c,d) and an other index on (a,b)(my indexes are attached) so I droped the index on (a,b) (because it's not necessary. I don't know how had created it). and then I have update statistics for this table. Normaly the space occuped by this table must diminute. unfortunately in not the case, so the space occuped by my table have not change. so I find that string. my question is: when i have index on (a,b,c,d) and i create index on(a,b). Informix create physicaly this index or it just use the index on (a,b,c,d) ??
