Oracle's use of DLM is just one of many ways to implement a database architecture. There are other architectures for clustered and MPP systems which do not require DLM for updates. I don't know which architecture Informix uses for Online 8.0 but I'm pretty sure they don't use a DLM. I don't think Sybase's Navigation Server uses DLMs either. Now unfortunately, I can't tell you what these other architectures are because I'll break a few NDAs if I do. There may be some research work you can ftp or some books you can buy but I don't know of any.
