Re: Informix upgrade 7.30 to 7.31
Posted in 2008
As far as I know there is no need to upgrade from 7.30 to 7.31. You can
treat moving from 7.30 to 7.31 as if you are moving from interim version
to another. Here is the usage that I get when I supply wrong option to
"onmode -b" in 7.31 engine environment:
/work/dattadg/tem% infx onmode -b 7777
You may only revert IBM Informix Dynamic Server to
the following IBM Informix-Online Versions:
Use 'onmode -b 5.0' to revert to the latest 5.0X maintenance release.
Use 'onmode -b 6.0' to revert to all 6.XX versions except 6.0ALS.
Use 'onmode -b 6.0A' to revert to 6.0ALS only.
Use 'onmode -b 7.1' to revert to 7.10.UC1 and prior to 7.10.UD1.
Use 'onmode -b 7.1UD1' to revert to 7.10.UD1 and prior to 7.20UC1.
Use 'onmode -b 7.2' to revert to 7.20.UC1 and prior to 7.30.UC1.

Quickest and fastest way:
* Install 7.31 in a separate directory along with CSDK and anything
else (like ISQL or 4GL) that you need in there.
* To upgrade:
1. Copy sqlhosts from the 7.30 directory tree to the 7.31 tree.
2. Copy ONCONFIG file from 7.30 tree to 7.31 tree and make any
changes you want.
3. Shutdown 7.30
4. Change INFORMIXDIR link to point to the 7.31 install directory
5. Start up 7.31 oninit
6. Update statistics with DROP DISTRIBUTIONS for all databases
& tables
7. Update statistics to replace distributions for all databases
and tables
8. Update statistics for all stored procedures in all databases
to recompile them.
* To downgrade:
1. Run 'onmode -b 7.30' to revert to 7.30 structures
2. Shutdown 7.31
3. Change INFORMIXDIR link to point to the 7.30
4. Start up 7.30 oninit
5. Repeat steps 6-8 in the upgrade section above
If you are not using a link for INFORMIXDIR you'll have to change all of
your scripts that specify INFORMIXDIR in order to change versions. It
might be easier to rename the 7.30 directory tree and just recreate the
name as a link to 7.31 or 7.30 as needed.

If you do the conversion/reversion in place this is not a problem.

Probably not, as long as you install the same version of ESQL or the
CSDK as you had before. If you want to also upgrade your CSDK/ESQL-C
version what you can do is to have older apps that have not yet been
recompiled continue to use the old INFORMIXDIR location of the 7.30
engine where the older library are installed and once an app has been
recompiled with the newer release it's startup environment can then be
changed to point to the new 7.31 INFORMIXDIR containing the newer CSDK
libraries.
Done carefully, upgrade and reversion are relatively quick and nearly
painless - especially between such closely related releases.
