The World's most basic newbie Question...

Would you experienced database folks humor me with this one? What are the fundamental advantages of a relational database over a flat file or ISAM type? What can one do that the other cannot? What about the "post relational" ie Pick-like databases, where do they fit in? Are there any texts or articles out there that someone could recommend that address these questions?
