autonumber question

hi all: If I use the autonumber as a key, exactly how far does it go? What's the upper limit for a autonumber index? What if I have 1 million record and continously adding to it? Also, I realize that if you delete a record, it won't use the same autonumber to number the next record, so it won't help if I delete the previous records? bascially, I am afraid that one day I'll find out I can't add any more records because of that. thanks yan
yan, > If I use the autonumber as a key, exactly how far does it go? by autonumber, i am assuming that you mean the serial data type? it is an signed integer, and so the maximun that you can assign to it is 2.147 billion, 2 gig. > realize that if you delete a record, it won't use the same autonumber no, but there is a way to make it wrap around and star at 0 again. i forget what it is, maybe someone can post it? > number the next record, so it won't help if I delete the previous > records? bascially, I am afraid that one day I'll find out I can't add > any more records because of that. only if you have more that 2g worth of rows. hope that helps. mickm -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a signature file.
