Create the partitions but don't mount them. Then create the informix aliases to these partitions. This gives you a lot of flexability in terms of expansion, and emergency repairs. Just also remember to leave some of the first pages (usally 4K in size) as an offset. This is important so you can expand the journal at a later date.
