I've found the hd or od coomand useful for displaying control characters. Apologises if this has already been suggested. On a different tack, I get problems with the ESC char been interpreted seperatedly from the rest of the string especially over networks. This is on Xenix 2.3.4. Robert Royall R.A.Royal@tees.ac.uk
