cursor stability isolation mode

Hi, In order to get a shared lock (using cursor stability in a transaction) on a particular row is it necessary to use "select * from tab_name where..."? I tried with "select 1 from tab_name where..." and the only lock I am getting is IS lock on the entire table instead of S lock on the fetched row. Regards, Abhishek
