Re: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.10.UB4TL on SuSE
Posted in 2007
Mostly a gripe/flame thread rather than a technical Q&A. The complaint: the IDS 11.10 beta extras for SuSE (specifically ISA, the Informix Server Administrator) ship as cpio archives rather than tar/RPM/installer, which the poster found archaic; others defended cpio (used for system backups, handles large files and special devices where tar on some Unixes can't). The real issue was ISA's httpd installation failing, which IBM reportedly reproduced with a fixed build expected. The poster eventually got ISA installed after fixing missing library symlinks, but dismissed it as outdated; talk then turned to an IIUG community AJAX/PHP replacement. No formal fix is recorded for the httpd failure.

Tar is no problem. The _ONLY_ time I've ever used cpio was for Informix! Never for anything else in 20 years of using UNIX and now the past 10 years of Linux, I've never had to use cpio for anything. There's some moron at IBM that must have come from Informix and perpetuated the stupidity of releasing something in cpio. Aww Timmy, C'mon. CPIO was the rage for doing system back ups. cpio -icvdumB ring a bell? Naw, you never did play around much as a Sun OS admin. ;-) Meaning RFTM as in read the man pages on cpio. Piece of cake. Or are you only able to grok a point and click interface? BTW, this is a BETA! Maybe IBM did this as part of a test. If you're not smurt enough to unpackage the beta, then maybe you shouldn't be running it? ;-) C'mon get with the program and quit your whinning ya panzy arse git! But hey what do I know? Being a Sys Admin just paid for my 5th year in college. -G >Tar is no problem. I know because someone did rm -rf / x We could not restore from system backups since they were in cpio format..and /bin/cpio was missing as well! /bin/tar was still there and as the true genius I am I managing to untar /bin/cpio from a SCO installation floppy! Once /bin/cpio was back I left it to the normal sysadmin (a lesser and now quite scared minor god) to work late and do the rest! > _________________________________________________________________ > Don't miss your chance to WIN 10 hours of private jet travel from Microsoft® > Office Livehttp://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/mcrssaub0540002499mrt/direct/01/
Actually, the Informix beta came in tar format ya git. ;-) It's the ISA that comes in cpio. And yes, I can used cpio --help to gimme options. But that of course is not the point. Now why would a tool like ISA come in cpio? In the grand scheme of things there are better ways to provide an installation, install shield, java installers, etc. cpio is not what I'd recommend simply because it's completely unnecessary to do it that way, and there are plenty of examples out there. If there is some reason why please let me know. This would be probably my first application on Linux requiring a direct use of cpio--and if I'm not mistaken, RPM is using cpio internally, but masked from the user. Incidentally, IBM duplicated my issue with the failure of the httpd portion of the installation, which is the main problem at this point. I expect there will be a new version out shortly with a corrected cpio. It would be best to distribute it as at least a tar but I know that's asking too much at this point. And as David alluded to, if the distribution is too large for tar, then split it up, and distribute it in pieces. If the application is so huge, that it requires special handling, then maybe it needs to be reconsidered as maybe having the wrong approach as an application. I can't think of a single other application on Linux using cpio. -t- Ian Michael Gumby wrote: > > Aww Timmy, > > C'mon. > CPIO was the rage for doing system back ups. > cpio -icvdumB ring a bell? > > Naw, you never did play around much as a Sun OS admin. ;-) > > Meaning RFTM as in read the man pages on cpio. Just a follow up on ISA... I got it installed, after a little adjusting to some missing library links on the system. It's onweb from what? 10 years ago! Total crap! I'll have it uninstalled shortly. All that for nothing! Bitch, bitch bitch . bitch. C'mon. The inclusion of ISA is something to satisfy a checklist and could be a placeholder for things to come. Maybe you might want to write your own AJAX based solution instead? _________________________________________________________________ The average US Credit Score is 675. Hi Gumby, Yes, bitch bitch bitch... that's all I do! :-) ISA "as a placeholder" ? When you go to the restaurant, do they leave bad food on the menu as a placeholder for better food? Just curious. :-) I just got into AJAX and PHP as a matter of fact. Still somewhat new to AJAX, so I'm not sure I'm ready to push out something like a new onweb or ISA--but maybe it would be a good group project for the IIUG community. I tried something like that a while back, and it takes a lot of time and effort to get everything right. If there was some serious interest from the community I might be interested in working with peoples to get something out there. I'm not sure I'd be the best person to get things started, but I'd be happy to chip in. I think a good idea would be to have the basic system with plugins for everyone's favorite little reports. -t- Ian Michael Gumby wrote: > > > >> From: Tool <tool@thetool.com> >> Just a follow up on ISA... I might be interested as well...
