Re: Informix 5.0.UD1 on Solaris 2.1

First of all, I like to clarify some mistakes I made in my previous posting. In my original posting, I unintentionally said that the suggested workaround was to eliminate the use of NIS. The actual workaround suggested was to not use the NIS services for INFORMIX applications. That is, the NIS can still be active while INFORMIX is running, just that INFORMIX can not use any NIS services. >There is a simple *claimed* workaround: just add the sqlexecd's service >name to /etc/services on the affected machine. (I can't try it myself) > This "*claimed* workaround" is incomplete. The real workaround is not as simple as you thought. There are at least four environment twikings need to be done to get things going here. I am not sure how many others are needed to get *everything* running. The following is a list of things that I had to change on all affected machines: /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/hosts /etc/services >>2) Is this policy for real? What kind of impression would it give >> to their prospects? >> >> Well, we evaluated Informix, it would have been a great >> product, if it works, but it does not and Informix will not >> fix it soon unless we pay first? > >No, I'd guess the point is that by the time they could build and completely >test a new port, your eval period would likely be over anyway. Nobody's >questioning that it's a serious problem, but given the simple workaround >(for a small development / eval situation such as yours), I wouldn't think >that an escalation would be warranted. Any maintenance port for 5.00 would >just delay the 5.01 port for that same platform by several weeks; I'd say >having 5.01 available first would be better for everyone. I am not sure if I get a sense of what you really mean. You indicated that the policy is not for real, then you went on to defend the policy. I am further confused about how in the world did you figure out the company I work for is a small one. I sure did not mention it in the mail. >-- >Alan Denney aland@informix.com {pyramid|uunet}!infmx!aland -- #include <std_disclaimer> Tony Chang email: tony@cwi.com or uunet!cwi!tony CaseWare, Inc. phone: (714) 453-2200 ext. 241
