INFORMIX and Barcodes Info

I have been assigned the task of updatining our inventory system to utilize barcodes. I know about Symbol and the RF version of 4gl, but we have over 50 buildings on campus plus many outlying areas of service so RF is not practicle at all. In light of this, what we are really after is a barcode reader that will allow me to down load my info from the reader to my Informix database via an ascii file or some similar mechanism. Does anyone have any experiences or bar code reader recommendations that they are willing to share? How did the implemenation go? Any pitfalls that were noticed/delt with? Please email me if you do. I am willing email a summary if anyone else is interested.
