In one of my previous clients, I scheduled ontape (via cron) to take the
backup to disk (cooked filesystem) and after some time the sysadmin's
script would be kicked off (also via cron), which would take backups of the
disk I just backed up the database into, among other things.

Subject: How to backup an instance of IDS?
Hi all,
I'm looking for a solution for daily backup of informix databases. Can
I integrate the informix backup with filesystem backup (with cpio command)
as job in the crontab?
I'm using raw device for informix databases....and have only one tape drive
for Filesystem backup and transaction log....
Thanks in advance for any idea....I'm really newbie in informix backup.

If you are using any 7.xx version the logical log backups can be
performed to disk each time a log file fills using the ALARMPROGRAM.
Get my package, utils3_ak, from the IIUG Software Repository which
implements this both as a script and as a more robust executable using
ontape. The default script that Informix delivers with 7.[23]x,
log_full.sh, does the same using onbar. As to doing the server level
archives from a cron to disk, unless your instance is smaller than 2GB,
you will have to write a robust launcher to manage the session with
ontape and rename the archive file when it fills and ontape prompts for
another "tape" and to respond to those prompts. The code in utils3_ak
for eventalarm.c, using readn.c, can be a good start on such a manager.
If you are using OL5.xx you will have to backup the logs from a cron
also, be sure to wake frequently enough so all the logs do not fill up.
You can write a launcher for tbtape -a as well just be extracting the
code from eventalarm.c.
