Matt,
I must agree with Jonathan, not that he needs it, :-) but 'make'
really is the way to go. I can't tell you what a mess that
i4gl system does, especially in the hands of some programmers.
And I'm not inferring you're bad, but i4gl is really a distraction
from good programming practice. It was a nice attempt at a
programming environment for its' time, but UNIX has so many better
tools for developing programs. And even if you move to Win95
or NT, there's nmake. But integrated environments are better
nowadays on Windows platforms, so using make directly can actually
be somewhat arduous and counter-productive.
Your gut reaction might be to say, "Oh Tim, thanks for the
tip, but I've no time for makefiles.". I didn't either when I was
in a sea of 4GL. So I came up with make_mk, specifically for making
makefiles for 4GL programs. It works on UNIX, I don't know how
well it works on non-UNIX platforms with bourne/korn shells.
make_mk is at my site. To use it, you'd do something like this:
Let's say my 4ge is called foo.4ge. I have 95 4GL programs, one
is a GLOBALS file, and the rest are modules. And I may want an
RDS version as well.
$ ls *.4gl > 4gl.lst# remove the GLOBALs 4gl file from this list if you have one.
# got screens?
$ ls *.per > per.lst
#if you have c files to link in, add them too.
$ ls *.c > c.lst
#if you have a globals file add it too.
$ echo "globals.4gl" > glb.lst
# Then run make_mk and give a name for your new makefile:
$ make_mk foo.mk
To make your executable or RDS program, you simply:
$ make -f foo.mkor
$ make -f foo.mk rds
You're done. The names of the .lst files are in make_mk. If they
exist when you run make_mk then the files listed in them will be
added to the makefile. It's not perfect, but should work for many
simple situations. Of course you could always do it by hand...
:-)
BTW, I have a 4GL report that somewhat reports on what is in your
syspgm4gl.dbs if you or anyone is interested in it.
