Configure ISM for onbar
Posted in 2013
Poster couldn't start ISM for ON-Bar on IDS 11.50/HP-UX: ism_startup -init failed on production with "group/pool/label already exists" errors and on the DR box with "$INFORMIXDIR does not contain a valid ISM installation". He later reported getting ISM configured and ON-Bar backup/restore working (no details given), then asked about restoring a production backup onto the DR server. Replies suggested ontape as simpler, but also explained the ISM "imported restore": run ism_startup -init and use ism_add/nsradmin to register the remote host and root/informix users, register the source ISM volumes on the target, copy the ixbar file over (renaming it ixbar.SERVERNUM if needed) and change the DBSERVERNAME prefix on each line; the ISM 2.2 manual in the 11.50 info centre was cited for full steps.

hi all,
i need help to configure ISM for onbar backup an restore. The idea is we try
to backup using onbar at production server and restore at dr server. All
informix environment totally same, using informix version 11.50 on HP-UX 11.31.
When i try to start ISM, i get this error
a. production server

b. dr server
# ism_startup -init

Both server we failed to start ISM. Please help how to fix this. IF we need to
re-install ISM on both server, please give step by step to do it. i ready find
step to uninstall ISM but do don't know how to restore back.
Thank you
i suggest using ontape - a lot easier.
Hi,
Thank for your suggestion.
I already success to configure ISM and right now, can use onbar backup and
restore successfully.
Right now, i try to backup (onbar -b -L 0 -w) at production and want to
restore at dr server (onbar -r -w). Can we do this or not? Backup and restore
on different server but have same OS version (HP-UX 11.31) and IDS 11.50 and
also same ids configuration.
thank you
A snippet from a shell script to register remote host and users, needs to be
run as root (ism_startup -init)
#!/bin/ksh
#Sets up ism on new server and readies for registering volumes from another
host
#
USAGE="Usage: $0 -s sourceHost -t targetHost\\
"
if [ $# -ne 4 ] -o "${1}" != "-s" -o "${3}" != "-t" ]
then
printf "${USAGE}"
exit 1
fi
SH="${2}"
TH="${4}"
ism_startup -init # can omit this if already run
ism_add -admin informix@${TH}
ism_add -admin root@${TH}
NSR_CMD="create type:NSR client;name:${SH};remote
access:root@${TH},informix@${TH},root,informix"
printf "${NSR_CMD}\\
" | nsradmin -s ${TH} -i -
NSR_CMD="
print type:NSR client;name:${SH}
update remote access:informix@${TH},root@${TH},informix,root
"
printf "${NSR_CMD}\\
" | nsradmin -s ${TH} -i -
You then will need to register the ism volumes from the source ism system with
the data and logical log backups and copy the ixbar file from the source to
the target server and rename the INFORMIXSERVER in the ixbar file.
Been a while since I had to do this. Hope it helps.

hi, "copy the ixbar file from the source to the target server and rename the INFORMIXSERVER in the ixbar file" It means, i can restore at dr server, just copy ixbar file? INFORMIXSERVER for both server already same. Which file i should copy to dr server? thank you
Yes, you need to copy the ixbar file from the source to the target and rename
the ixbar file ixbar.SERVERNUM on the target if required, both may be
SERVERNUM 0, so no need to rename. Each line in the ixbar file is prefixed
with the DBSERVERNAME. You will need to replace that with the name of the
target INFORMIXSERVER.

Yes it is possible.
I restore DB's from one machine to another, often, where the production
machines are backed up by ISM.
It is much easier to do this type of work with the simpler ontape utility,
( when a restart of replication is require we cut an ontape like others
have suggested because it is that much easier ) when people accidentally
destroy data and we need to extract the destroyed data without a restore of
the production instance I use procedures I extracted from the ISM 2.2
Manual to accomplish the task.
You are looking for instructions for an "Imported Restore" I make the
assumption you are using ISM 2.2 I find the most complete instruction's
are located in the ISM2.2 manual that is in the Informix 11.50 information
center. Here is a link to get you to where you need to be ( sort of )
