I haven't heard back from Informix's Investor relations. (Hey Rob, if your reading this newsgroup, kick some sense in to them....) From the rumors I have heard at the conference, New Era, is in a bit of a quandry. Please remember that N.E. is both a language, and a collection of classes. While the language may be sane, the class hiearchy is not. Please check out the IIUG site for the "ask the experts" session. There was one question pertaining to N.E. which is extremely important in showing an inherent problem with the object hierarchy. (Its inability to delagate a message to another object outside of its own object hierarchy. [Base visual object is the window.]) While this seems trite, it has serious implications when trying to build multi-windowed and some dynamic applications. [Again, this can be fixed by modifying the root object to allow for delegation. And a modification in the Application objects.] Also keep in mind that the object class of New Era was not built by Informix, but by other third parties. Some of them were not truly versed in OO design. This too has lead to problems. So here's the crux which Informix must face. Informix needs some form of a solution which they can offer to have Informix as a One stop shop for clients who want to have a single vendor solution. Also remember that N.E. was once a platform independant solution. So Informix must have something. While Java is a new option, Informix needs to then develop a class hierarchy of objects to access Informix databases. (Developers would rather work with abstacted objects rather than the raw underlying objects.) So, until Informix solidifies their Java position, they still need N.E. Also note that their investment in design tools for N.E. are not necessarily written in N.E. and could be ported to do the same function in Java, once the classes are built. This means that N.E. may not be dead, but rather no new developments will be made. Sort of like wha they wanted to do with 4GL, but Kerry, the crazy N.Z.er took them hostage until they submitted to his wrath and gave in to his demands... ;-) (Said affectionately ;-) This is pure speculation on my part, and is based on several different conversations with several people. Of course it would be nice if Informix could clarify the statements. -Mikey (Please keep my .sig in mind when reading this!) -- #include <std_disclaimer.h> /* Mike Segel (MS385) */ #include <No_Spam.h> #ifdef OFFENDED_BY_CONTENT The author takes no responsibility for this post.
