lookups under informix 4.0 & perform

When it finds a match, it displays table2.name, which is a description of the entries. This works, but is soooooooooooo slow. Takes roughly an hour to do queries! (under perform only, under SQL, it's lightning fast) I've played around with the indexes with no luck. So, I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any restrictions from doing multiple lookups off of just one table.
