I've never seen a x86 box that didn't work that way and I know that MOST other do to. But since stating this I realize there are exceptions to the rule. -----Original Message----- From: Bill Dare [mailto:dareb@jevic.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 4:17 PM To: Phillips, Rob; informix-list@iiug.org Subject: RE: Informix Throughput So, where did you hear that? Base 2? I wouldn't post mime to this group either. Tends to piss off the clown. Personally, I'm afraid of clowns. But since stating this I realize there are exceptions to > the rule. Those 20 and 24 CPU boxes I worked on in the mid-80's must have been fictitious, then? Granted, there is a strong tendency for the number of CPUs to be a power of two, and an even stronger tendency for there to be a multiple of two; nevertheless, I believe you can obtain machines with odd numbers of CPUs. Also, when one fails, you end up with an odd number, usually. Of course, those sneaky hyperthreading chips always provide you with an even number of apparent CPUs... :-) > -----Original Message----- > From: Bill Dare [mailto:dareb@jevic.com] > > So, where did you hear that? I'd worry about the speed/bandwidth of the memory in the new box, and depending on what is available, I'd probably go with 6 or 8 CPU's; probably 8 if I thought the system might have to do more work in the future. I'd probably also go with more memory, too. Few applications shrink with new releases. -=JL=-
