Tunning CPU VPS and Processor Affinity

Hi everybody! I'm planning a migration from HP PA-RISC model RP3440 (4CPU X 2core) with IDS 11.10 FC2 in HP-UX 11.10 to Dell PowerEdge Server R710 (2 Sockets Xeon 2.93GHz X 4Core with 2 threads per core - HyperThread) using IDS 11.50 FC5 in Linux RHEL 5. My question is: How can I get the best performance with IDS setting CPU VPS and Processor Affinity? When I execute the htop command on RHEL 5 to monitor my environment, the Operating System "see" 16 processors. Does anybody has some tips? Thanks, Alberto.
Ignore the hyper threads and configure for the 8 physical cores. On a 2.9GHZ Xeon processor, I would not configure more than 3-4 CPU VPs per core on a dedicated IDS server machine. Less if you will be sharing the machine with client applications or other software depending on the percentage of resources you want to dedicate to IDS. On HPUX don't forget to set the aging option in the VPCLASS entries (HPUX is rather predatory at reducing the priority of long running processes that do not have process aging blocked). As to affinity, I'm not certain there's much to be gained from affinity settings on he Xeon architecture. The memory interconnects are quick and the processors are set up as SMP with equal access to all resources (as opposed to Numa architecture where migrating a task/thread from one processor group to another can be costly causing a physical memory copy).
