Starting with 7.x, Informix allows you to detach indices, placing them in a different dbspace from the data if you wish. You can also spread the data between dbspaces using a rule-based distribution or a round-robin distribution. It allows I/O to be spread out over disks in a controlled manner, as opposed to a single disk getting hammered because of one table accessed repeatedly Not too bad.
