With Informix 7+ systems, USERS and TRANSACTIONS parameters in config
files
are made dynamic. Informix starts off with 128 userthreads as default
and
keeps alloting in blocks of 128 subsequently based on the user activity
requirements. As far as i know there is no limit on the number of
userthreads
it can grow to except for the limitations of the shared memory. Once it
reaches
its shared memory limit( i.e. if it can't get any more memory from
system), the
Informix online system will hang.
The only way you can make sure that the userthreads are not growing
beyond a
limit is ny specifying in the config file NETTYPE parameter, where you
specify
the maximum users that can be connected to On-line system. One
clarification
is needed here, when Informix comes on-line, the online engine will
start some
threads for its use (ex: there will 8 oninit threads, #of page cleaner
threads, etc).
That is the reason why though you do not physically have 128 users,
online will
add another block of userthreads to the system.
in the 'onstat -u' command last line, # active is the number of
currently
active threads, #total is the number of threads available to become
active
before online dynamically adds more and finally the #Max is the maximum
active
threads that the online system has after it has started. You would have
to
remember that when bounce the online, system again will start from
defaults
and keeps growing.
Hope this will clarify the issues.
