IDS tries to sort in memory, but if the quantity of data to be sorted
passes a threshhold the data is written to sort-work files and another
block is sorted. Finally the sort-work files are merged to produce the
result set.
IDS uses either tempdb spaces, rootdb, or filesystem space for the sort-work
files depending on the settings of DBSPACETEMP and the PSORT_ environment
variables. If PSORT_NPROCS and PSORT_DBTEMP are both set then parallel sorting
occurs using the filesystems listed in PSORT_DBTEMP. If either or both of the
PSORT_ variables are not set then if there are any temp db spaces listed in
DBSPACETEMP those are used, otherwise ROOTDBS is used.
If PDQPRIORITY is set the memory grant manager is used to allocate memory for
sorting in memory and the DS_ ONCONFIG parameters (DS_TOTAL_MEMORY and
DS_MAX_QUERIES) control the size of memory actually used - see the Administrator
Reference and the Performance Guide for details.
