Transaction mode on ids 11.50
Posted in 2011
A user on Windows/IDS 11.50 couldn't switch a database (dbbos/tgetest) to transaction logging: onbar -b -L 1 -f failed with untranslated "Message 43075/43247 not found" errors, and ondblog returned "Message 43422 not found". Repliers explained -f lists dbspaces and onbar needs a storage manager, that ondblog must be run before a level-0 (or fake) archive, and suggested ontape equivalents (e.g. ontape -s -L 0 -B dbname, TAPEDEV to NUL/-F). None worked for him. The fix came from John Miller: run as informix in dbaccess against sysadmin — task("alter logmode","tgetest","buf") then task("archive fake"). The poster confirmed it solved the problem.

Hi, I got realy annoying problem with turning on transaction mode on my db.
I read a lot about turning this option so plz correct me if Im wrong.
I should turn up backup level.
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>onbar -b -L 1 -f C:\\\\
IFMXDATA\\\\ol_svr_custom\\\\ol_rootek.dat.000
Is this ok?
In logs im getting:
2011-07-08 11:15:23 3252 3252 C:\\\\PROGRA~1\\\\IBM\\\\IBMINF~1\\\\11.50\\\\bin\\\\onbar_d -b -L
1 -f C:\\\\IFMXDATA\\\\ol_svr_custom\\\\ol_rootek.dat.000
2011-07-08 11:16:49 3252 3252 Message 43075 not found.
No such file or directory
2011-07-08 11:16:49 3252 3252 Message 43247 not found.
Im 100% sure that path is correct.
Im even ending the path with "TAB" button so it must be correct. What can be
the reason of that?
Next step is
ondblog buf tgetest
And that should be all?
Use ontape instead of onbar. Also set the value of TAPEDEV to /dev/null and
run: ontape -s -B or whatever version of transaction logging you want.

Database is on windows machine.
I try to run that comand and im getting nothing, no error, no nothing...
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>ontape -s -B
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>
even ontape -help isent writing anything
Is this normal?
Hello,
onbar option "-f" is used only in case of verifying backed-up storage
spaces.
If you want to use onbar, you must set up some storage manager
(supported by Informix)
and than you can do backup with onbar command.
If you are using onbar already, than you just have to do ondblog command
ondblog buf tgetest
and after next scheduled onbar backup, logging status will be changed.
If you
need to change status immediately, than you have to start onbar backup.
Otherwise, if you do not have storage manager configured, you can do the
same
with ontape backup.

The command should be ontape -s -B <databasename>.
As for the TAPEDEV parameter then I am not sure. I was reading about NUL.
Hopefully another contributor can help out there. An alternative is to set
TAPEDEV to a file name and then run the ontape command. It will do a backup
and set the transaction mode. You can then just remove the backup.

You would need the level as well...
-L 0
before -B...

Hmm..
Is backup realy neccecery in my case?
Few of my databases are in logging mode...
NAME IS_LOGGING IS_BUFF_LOG IS_ANSI
sysmaster 1 0 0
sysutils 1 0 0
sysuser 1 0 0
sysadmin 1 0 0
dbbos 0 0 0
I just need to convert dbbos to logging mode - I know, ondblog should help,
but:
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>ondblog buf dbbos
Message 43422 not found.
Problem with this is i cant find that error message.
Yes it is.

Hi again, I don`t wanna be helpless but i got problem with this, please look at screan http://www.imagebam.com/image/e4c040139670142 I dident get any error or any information about that its ok or not.
Interesting place to share pictures :):):) This is expected behavior - if command exits with success, it does not display anything. Look now for logging status of your database. Doesn't look wrong... What does the message log say? should be a reference to the changed logging mode for the db. I know, i know, i just hope ur adult. It does look wrong becouse i can write anything, and i get nothing... Look: http://www.imagebam.com/image/b0edfc139674809 still nothing. sysmaster 1 0 0 sysutils 1 0 0 sysuser 1 0 0 dbbos 0 0 0
Three things, but first I don't know what those messages are about. First
thing: You have to run the ondblog to queue the database for a logging
change BEFORE taking the archive. Second thing: You can only change the
logging status of a database by taking a full level zero (0) archive. You
seem to be taking a level one (1) archive below. Third, I don't use onbar
much, but I believe that you cannot use -f <path> to direct an onbar archive
to a file that way, you have to have set up a storage manager to handle the
output processing. You CAN use ontape for this however, and if you normally
use onbar for your "official" archives you can make the archive a "fake"
archive (ie it won't be recorded by the engine as the latest archive. See
the Backup and Restore Guide for details.

To make databases "mydaabase" and "your_database" use unbuffered logging
using a "fake" backup (remove the -F to allow Informix to record the
backup):
ontape -s -L 0 -F -t c:\\\\somefolder\\\\somefile.out -U mydatabase your_database
To make database "mydatabase" use buffered logging using a "real" backup
(add the -F option to prevent Informix from keeping a record of the backup):
ontape -s -L 0 -B mydatabase -t c:\\\\somefolder\\\\somefile.out

The error message probably means that your environment is not set up
properly. Is %INFORMIXDIR% set? Check setnet32 to make sure.

I don't use informix on Window often.
However on UNIX the onbar command does not have options to change the
logging of a database.
The command you included in your Email is a request to do a level 1 archive
on only specific DBspaces listed in the file after the -f option.
As already pointed out you can use ontape to accomplish this, or usde the
ondblog command ( which only sets up the change that will happen at the
next archive, which I believe must be a Level 0 archive ) You can do a
"fake" archive with onbar using the -F option
So:
ondblog buf tgetest
onbar -b -F ( or onbar -b -L 0 -w if you want to do a real
archive )
or
ontape -s -B tgetest ( if you have TAPEDEV set to /dev/null archive is"fake" else it is real )
George.

Hello,
It`s sunday and I dident resolved problem till now.
My environment is set up correcly - i think, Message 43422 isent discribed,
and whole base is working ok.
i try with this:
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>ondblog buf tgetest
Message 43422 not found.
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>onbar -b -F
C:\\\\Program Files\\\\IBM\\\\IBM Informix Dynamic Server\\\\11.50\\\\bin>
And there is no progres.
I know thats sounds crazy but maybe someone can help me @ team viewer?
I think for person who know what he is doing it will be just few minuts but
for me it realy problematic.
My suggestion would be to try an easier way.
If you have a tool to execute generic sql statements, such as dbaccess,
then
ensure you are user informix and execute the following sql statements:
database sysadmin;
execute function task("alter logmode", "tgetest","buf");
execute function task("archive fake");
select * from sysmaster:sysdatabases;
