MCI SELECTS INFORMIX DATABASE FOR THREE-TERABYTE DATA WAREHOUSING APPLICATION INFORMIX-OnLine Extended Parallel Server 8.0 Outperforms Oracle and IBM Databases in Rigorous Testing and Evaluation Process MENLO PARK, Calif., (April 24, 1995) -- Informix Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:IFMX), the leader in parallel processing database technology, today announced the first customer win for INFORMIX-OnLine Extended Parallel Server 8.0 (OnLine XPS), the company's implementation of its Dynamic Scalable Architecture (DSA) for loosely coupled and massively parallel (MPP) computing environments. MCI Communications Corp. (MCI) has selected OnLine XPS as the database infrastructure for a data warehouse application for its Consumer Markets Division. After a thorough testing period evaluating performance, reliability, scalability and vendor responsiveness, OnLine XPS was selected over IBM DB2 AIX Parallel Edition and Oracle Parallel Server. MCI's data warehouse, which will serve as the database for Consumer Markets Division's corporate data , will run on IBM's MPP system, SP2. MCI was a beta test site for OnLine XPS, which is based on Informix's industry-leading Parallel Data Query (PDQ) technology first released in INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server version 7.0 in February 1994. OnLine Dynamic Server version 7.1 was chosen by MCI in 1994 to serve as the foundation of a 600 gigabyte data mart, running on Sun Microsystems' symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) hardware. OnLine XPS is currently scheduled to be available in Q4 1995 initially on IBM's SP2 and other leading MPP systems. "OnLine XPS achieved outstanding results against the best of the competing database vendors in performance and scalability. Informix simply delivered what they promised," said Rob Geller, director of consumer marketing and sales systems at MCI. "Our data warehouse will put critical consumer data at our fingertips allowing us to make faster strategic business decisions. For example, the data warehouse will enhance our New Friends and Family product by allowing us to better understand our customers." "Informix's OnLine Dynamic Server and OnLine Extended Parallel Server continue to outperform other RDBMS engines, proving Informix database servers are the best solutions for data warehousing environments requiring access to massive amounts of data," said Phil White, chairman and CEO of Informix Software. "With the Informix database, MCI plans to stay a step ahead in data warehousing by broadening its targeted customer base to include nearly all consumers in the United States -- a feat that could not be accomplished without this technology." MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., has expanded from its core long distance business to become the world's third largest carrier of international calling and a premier provider of data communications over the vast Internet computer network. With annual revenue of more than $13.3 billion, the company today provides a wide array of consumer and business long distance and local services, data and video communications, online information, electronic mail, network management services and communications software.
