Re: Using synonyms to update remote tables
Posted in 1997
I'm aware of some bugs with this. For example, if you've got 'a' on server
'A' as a synonym for table 'b' on server 'B', as in:
CREATE TABLE b@B ( stuff );
CREATE SYNONYM a@A FOR TABLE b@B;
Now, if you're on server A and execute 'DROP TABLE a', it will not just drop
the synonym on A, it will drop the real table on 'B'!! (Assuming you have
permission to do this). There are also some permission problems associated
with this.
In general, I don't recommend using synonyms for remote insert/update. If
you're using them for read-only, that's fine. But I would not recommend
allowing updates to a remote table via a synonym. What is your specific
need?
