But as to their computer systems, no-one WANTS a pile of fetid steaming dingoes' kidneys. They've just been lumbered with a mess because some in-bred half-wit didn't do his job properly. What irks me beyond my ability to express is when customers decide to chuck squillions of dollars/euros/pounds/dongs in hardware or cacheing bollocks at any given issue, because it's "lower risk" than fixing the root cause (99 times out of 100, it's some crap code.) So, in a year's time, when the hardware runs out of steam, they have to do it all again. If they'd listened to some sense and fixed the root cause, they'd be running happily on their old systems, instead of having thrown money at it, over and over. Case in point: I have two customers A and B, I've been consulting to them both for years now. Customer A listens to me (and other relevant technical consultants) and implements recommendations. They get the expected life (and some more) out of their systems. They rarely have performance (or any other) issues, because they take preventative action before issues bite them. Customer B, I don't know why they pay for my time, they never listen to me. They've had more crises and chucked more hardware at their environment than anyone I've ever met. I can't even get my head around their hardware infrastructure any more, but I'm sure that if they listened to me when I started talking to them about their specific issues, they'd still be running a couple of boxes and routers. I'm very unpopular at customer B, because I don't accept their approach to their IT and question it at every opportunity. It is wrong to just say: "the customer wants it, so that's what we have to do." If you don't challenge them, they're never going to fix it, and you're going to become an accomplice in causing yourself more pain. Blimey. I must be annoyed or something. -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien ' dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche "I'm trying to see things your way, but I can't get my head up my ass" - JCH "Ogni uomo mi guarda come se fossi una testa di cazzo" - Marco Travel broadens a person.
