null values for ESQL/C variables

Is it possible to assign a null value to an ESQL/C variable in version 4.1? I have some integer columns where I'd like to set them to null when the input file does not assign them a value. I see that you can use the keyword NULL in where clauses, or insert & update statements, but I don't see anything in the manuals about setting variables to null.
