I generally use a local loopback tcp to communicate with the engine, but
the main reason that I do that is because I have limited memory.
As far as performance, if your application is doing a lot of data transfer
to/from the engine, then SHM will be faster/better. However, if the
application is basically doing "data warehouse" type applications, there
will probably be no real difference.
