What happened is that Red Hat grabbed the NPTL enhancement from the 2.5 kernel and shoehorned it into their 2.4 kernel on RHL9 and RHEL3. To support NPTL, Red Hat also enabled the thread-local variable changes in glibc on those distros. The "errno" warning is a real bug in IDS that the new glibc "outs". That said, a lot of people seem to think that NPTL is bad because it "broke" IDS. NPTL is good in that Linux now has scalable, fully posix-compliant threads (unlike the previous pthread implementation). Red Hat was just an early adopter; but believe-you-me, when 2.6 kernel-based distros start coming out, there will only be more wailing and gnashing of teeth until IBM does a *real* NPTL port of IDS-7.30 (which will probably never happen)! So, if you need it to work *right now* with a Red Hat distro, either get IDS-9.40.UC2 and purchase support to get the csdk patch that enables the 7.32 tools to work with NPTL, or go back to pre-RHL9 and purchase support from Progeny. -- Forte International, P.O.
